This North Idaho family session in Hope, Idaho turned into one of those unforgettable stories.

The family had recently purchased a beautiful vacation home overlooking the water near Lake Pend Oreille. Their children and grandchildren were all gathering for a week together, so they decided it was the perfect opportunity to schedule an extended family photo session while everyone was in one place.

When Mom first reached out, she asked if I’d be willing to photograph everyone at their home instead of traveling to another location.

My answer was simple.

“Absolutely.”

One of my favorite things about family photography is creating images where life is already happening. A backyard you’ve worked hard for. A dock where the grandkids jump into the lake. A front driveway lined with trees that instantly feels like home.

Those places matter.

Then the Plans Changed…

About a week before the session, Mom called with a little secret.

Her youngest son wanted to propose to his girlfriend during the photo session.

Would I help capture it?

Without hesitation… yes.

We adjusted the flow of the session just a bit. Instead of saving their couple’s portraits until later, we photographed them near the beginning.

She had no idea what was coming.

One small adjustment for the light…

One deep breath…

And suddenly he was down on one knee.

Behind me, the entire family quietly watched before erupting into cheers the moment she said yes.

One of the sweetest parts of the morning wasn’t actually the proposal.

It was something the family had said beforehand.

“Let’s do the proposal early so she’s wearing her ring in all the family photos.”

That simple sentence told me everything.

She wasn’t becoming part of the family.

She already was.
