First off, what is a shoot-along?
A photographer-led shoot-along is a session designed for photographers to join a lead photographer on a shoot—usually to learn, build their portfolio, and create without the typical pressures of a client session. It’s an opportunity to observe, practice, and be inspired in a real-world setting with guidance from someone further along in their craft.
Although I’ve been photographing families for two decades now, I didn’t even hear about shoot-alongs until about five years ago. At the time, I was craving growth – wanting to level up posing, maybe explore some new lighting techniques, and just re-spark some creative momentum.
That’s when I found Jodi Buckles. I was taking an online photography school class during the summer of 2020 (thank you, covid), and her approach immediately pulled me in. Her calm voice, her step-by-step guidance through a family session – all on a screen – felt so personal and grounded. You could just tell she was a gentle soul who had a gift for both storytelling through images and teaching with grace and kindness.

That class sparked something in me. Since then, I’ve made it a mission to attend at least one retreat or conference every year, and one shoot-along too. Not just with Jodi – though hers are extra special. She pours herself into every detail: dreamy locations, kind and connected client models, coordinated outfits in stunning textures and tones (I’m still dreaming about that hand-dyed silk dress!). She makes everyone feel welcome and seen, and honestly, I learn something new every time.

This spring, I joined her for a motherhood shoot-along in the rolling coastal hills of Marin County, CA. The session featured a beautiful mama with her three daughters – two preteens and a baby girl – all styled in creamy textures, soft linens, and a hand-dyed silk dress. The setting, the light, the movement – it was all just stunning.

While the wardrobe and location weren’t my own, the way I saw and captured the moments was entirely me. These images reflect how I naturally approach any session: with intention, softness, and a focus on connection. Whether we’re in Santa Cruz or North Idaho, I bring the same energy to every shoot – honoring what’s real, what’s beautiful, and what feels like you.

I hope you enjoy these just as much as I do.
