North Idaho Family Photography Sessions

There’s a window here in North Idaho… late summer easing into early fall… where everything just settles into place.
The air is warm, but not heavy.
The sun stretches a little longer across the sky.
And the river slows everything down… whether you mean for it to or not.
These sessions took place along the banks of the Pend Oreille River on several of those evenings that felt almost too good to plan… you just show up and let it unfold.

What I loved most about these evenings…
They weren’t posed.
They weren’t rushed.
And they definitely weren’t about everyone looking at me at the same time… all the time.
It was siblings tucked in close…
Little hands reaching and grabbing…
A baby watching everything with wide, curious eyes…
And parents right there in the middle of it… holding, laughing, adjusting, just being.
The kind of sessions where kids can sit… or not sit.
Where they can run… or climb… or lean into mom for a minute.
Nothing forced.
Nothing stiff.
Just real life… in really beautiful light.

This is why I schedule sessions when I do…
That soft, end-of-day light wraps around everything.
It filters through the trees.
It reflects off the water.
And it gives us this warm, sun-kissed glow without the heat, without the harsh shadows, without the squinting.
It’s the kind of light that lets kids be kids…
and lets parents relax into the moment instead of managing it.
One of my favorite moments from these sessions?
The kids running…
laughing…
completely in their own world.
No one told them to do that.
No one needed to.
Because when kids feel comfortable… they move.
And when they move… that’s where the magic shows up.
Those are the images that last.
Not the perfectly posed ones…
but the ones that feel like your life.

By the time we wrap up your session… it’s usually right around 7:30 or 8:00pm in the summer.
The light is fading…
the kids have played hard…
and everyone’s a little hungry in that end-of-the-day kind of way.
Which makes it feel like the most natural thing in the world to stop for ice cream on the way home.
One of my favorite nearby spots is Squatchee’s… a little local shop that just fits the vibe of these evenings perfectly.
It’s not part of the session…
just something I love to suggest.
A simple way to turn your photo session into a full summer night your kids will remember.
(And honestly… it kind of feels like a reward for everyone showing up and doing the dang thing.)
If you’re looking for something simple…
something relaxed…
something that actually feels like your family…
This is it.
An evening by the river.
Kids free to move.
Light that does most of the work for us.
And a session that feels a whole lot more like a memory than a photoshoot.
